Z is for Zulu On My Stoep and other Z's

Oh my, its finally happened. The time has come to bid the A-Z Challenge goodbye. I can't believe this is the last post for it. There were times when it felt like it would never end. Congratulations to myself and fellow bloggers for sticking with it to the end. It is no small feat.  Raises your glasses everybody.

My Z post is very short but full of good memories. It's dedicated to South African movies that I watched in my early and late teens.  I had such a wonderful time watching these and now my children enjoy them too.
I love Leon Schuster, he does such a great job at putting his brand of comedy on film. My son asked me to get these again when he saw these clips, they are great family fun, perfect for winter days in the house.
But before you watch the clips I'd like to draw your attention to the last 3 clips which is about Shaka Zulu. You can see the beauty of Zulu land in this video. I'm sure the location here is the valley of a thousand heels.
Kind Shaka was the most influential leader of the Zulu people and was unfortunately killed by his own brothers when he showed signs of dementia, the result of not coping with the death of his mother Nandi I think.

  1. I have never seen those clips or that show before. How intriguing. We always get stuck into thinking TV shows don't exist outside America but there are some really wonderful ones out there.

  2. South Africa is doing really well in the movie business these day. If you see Invictus, it got nominations and awards at Oscars I think. There's also Tsotsi which won awards over there and Jerusalema as well, look out for them. Tsotsi was too much for me so I never finished it but Jerusalema I have watched over and over...love that movie. There also one about space aliens which just came out and made waves over there, I forget the name but will look it up for you. Also look our for a movie series called Spud, one of the most wonderful SA writers's books went on screen. Comedy mostly and hilariously funny. These clips are of very old movies, at least 18 years for the comedies and about 25 for the Shaka one. Yesterday I read his biography and learnt that J.R.R Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein which is about 500km from where I am, can you believe that. Amazing.

  3. I watched Shaka Zulu as a teenager. I remember there was a woman in it, she might have been a wise woman or something, but she had weird eyes and she scared the living daylights out of me. Shaka was a fearsome figure too. I'd see them in the dark after I went to bed. Yeah, I'm loopy. I know. :D

  7. I enjoyed watching these clips. I agree with Clarissa, it's easy to forget what great stuff is outside of your own cultural box, and it's always great to have recommendations of other things to check out.

Congrats on completing the A to Z Challenge. I've enjoyed getting to know you and reading all your posts!
