Happy Friday ya'll. Today is poetry Friday and I'm fearuring Tirzah Goodwin from A Clever Whatever on both blogs so for my more comprehensive comment on her poetry and to enjoy Eden's Prison, check out Fabulosity Reads. In short let me say Tirz's poems are just like her. Quick witted, Clever in that Whatever kinda way, full of humor and surprises.
Without further ado, enjoy this week's selection for Tirzah Goodwin from Love and Lighter Fluid.

What Is A Miracle?
In flip-flops
in classic Chanel,
in baggy khakis
and wrinkled t-shirts
the tourists come,
slurping on Big Gulps,
whining about the weather
which is hotter
than Alabama in August
or so we hear
but still they come
couples, families,
hordes of them
just
to touch the water,
to take a photograph,
to piss behind the statue
of our Blessed Saint.
We sigh
at the bother and noise
but still sell them
bottled water, beer,
limp sandwiches,
religious pamphlets
printed on cheap paper,
telling the story
of the miracle.
And it is a miracle...
one measured in dollars,
in lira, in rubles,
in pound notes,
in children's full bellies
in repaired roofs
in clean water
in meat for the pot,
in a stranger's hope,
and a friend's relief.
What is a miracle?
Great poem, Tirz! It's so true that people stream, searching for miracles. But, what do they find? Just love it!
ReplyDeleteHey Clarissa, this poem says so much to me and one of the things is speaks of is the irony. That what the miracle is, is dependent on the interpretation of the receiver. If that makes any sense.
ReplyDeletejust left the other blog and read that poetry piece so i slid on by for this one. NICE!!
