To Love, Honour and Betray by Kathy Lette: A Book Club Review

To be very frank I struggled to finish this book but finish it I had to because it showed promise. I know I start of in a somewhat disparaging note and I must quickly add that it's not the authors fault, I suspect it was my penchant for ridiculous helpings of blood, gore, Middle Earth, erotica thrown in now and again and the likes of OdinGandalfJack Sparrow  and so on making more than occasional appearances for good measure. And so I found this to be far too close to reality for my liking but is a worthwhile read if you are the type that get's lost in lopsided romantic comedy and lots of self deprecating jokes. For me it's a book for your beach bag: easy, non-threatening, undemanding, humorous.

Description:

I' taking this straight from one of the descriptives on the back cover.
Above all, this book . is a survival guide for anyone who has realised that the perfect marriage is like an orgasm - many of them are faked.
My take on it is that its about a 30 something year old house executive left with two teen girls for a "not younger  pencil skirt wearing, 8 inch stilleto reptile who was her best friend".. It's about pulling yourself towards yourself when you world has been shattered.
The following  is one of my very favourite passages from the  book, one of those which make it a worthwhile book to pass a lazy summer afternoon with very light reading, on the patio with cheese, fruit and wine or on a deck chair by the beach (book in one hand something who's colour is rainbow inspired with a little umbrella and ice on the other). Operative words? Light read.
Here goes:
"Ha ha." She put her hand to her head to ease the throb. "You're not going to believe this...."
"Believe me after what I've been through this year, it's gonna be pretty damn amazing for me to be shocked".
"Alli kissed me."
"AL-Qaeda dot com!"
"I know. We were at a party at JDs nightclub and danced till dawn. He's so gentle. And those chocolate eyes. I think I could fall for him Lucy, except it would never work out. I wear the Star of David necklace. He wears a Koranic leather pendant. If we go out the crops will fail, the planets will stop revolving around the son, everybody's penises will fall off........
By the way keep in mind that the women in this particular passage are in their mid thirties to early forties and the man in question is a boy not a day over 20 and a couple of years.

I have not as yet found a free legal download and should there be one available and I am opportune to lay my hands on it, I will do no other than to make it available here first. In the mean time, if this is your genre, then I think you may find it a worthwhile investment and Amazon has it at super reasonable prices as an epub and a soft cover book, both less than a R100 each.
Before I go off I must say though I am really looking forward to reading her first book which I am told is called Nip n Tuck. Everyone that has read this book has given rave reviews, and I might add that they've all been over 40. So let's see if it lives up to it's reputation.....I'm actually not sure if I should read it now or wait until I'm forty since it does deal with becoming 40. As if I don't have enough on my thirties plate.......

  1. Nice review, I don't think the whole older woman thing and younger man works for me though. But I may add it to my kindle.

  2. I think the author agrees with you because as she predicts, it does not work out with the younger men in the book. But then I think its its one of those little hurdles some persons experience in order to move on to another level. More like a road that once travelled you never want to go down again.
