The cunning mum

Some of you may or may not be aware of the mega battle that rages between parents and technology. Today I feel like I have gained significant ground against this tyrannical god. Yesterday I gave my son a copy of Neil Gainman's Coraline and later asked him how he was finding it to which he said: "it's really wonderful mommy"and in fact even as I type he's at it. Now my son does like reading but if he has to choose between his favourite tv. show his play station and a book, the toss would be between the spawns of technology.

So today while having some me time in the shower, some people sing, I ponder, I had an epiphany. He's always looking for ways of making extra money to save up in his bank account. I think the idea of having an ATM card and depositing and withdrawing is quite appealing to him because he has no access to his current account and with a new phone his lunch allowance doesn't cover maintenance costs.

You may ask: "are their no chores for him to do and get paid" but to me that is tantamount to paying for their being born. I will not pay someone for cleaning out their room, taking out the trash, etc. That's what we all have to do in penance for something we did on the first day we landed on the birthing table.

So I thought it quite clever of me when I said to him this morning I had a business proposal. For each books he reads and writes a review on, I will pay him $2 (R14) which when you consider that this could get me a Kindle eBook I don't think is bad. He may have to reread some but the idea of him actually writing a short assay about what he's read and then type it for publication I think is awesome. He was almost jumping out of his sneakers when I told him he's so excited.

Our agreement is as such.

  1. He must come up with a name for his segment on my Fabulosity Reads.
  2. He must do at least one review a week.
  3. Deliver at least 1 reviews a week using the following structure:

This Story is about

I thought this was really cool.....

I thought it would have been even better if......

In short I think.......

I will go with him to open a new bank account, pay him by EFT each month and then print his bank statement.

I bet you very soon picking up a book will be more common place than picking up the remote. Once books get your creative juices going you can't help but get hooked.

OH, Kader Asmal Died Yesterday

An icon: Kader Asmal
This is terrible news. I don't know him well as a person but as a politician he projected a man of integrity, principal and love for people and concern for their well being . He believed that in our country everyone should stand up for what is right. He was definitely one of those whom I never thought i'd hear is gone, such was his impact and presence in this society. He was active right up to the end, he gave a talk last week and was currently reading a book on human rights which laid at his bedside when he was admitted to hospital . I honor him as a human being worthy of the most prestigious positions in the books and records of South African history and the world. We no longer have many left of this mans caliber and certainly, our government is so lacking of them it's left an oozing, festering sore.
May his great soul rest in peace.

Monte Casino (Where all currencies meet....LOL)

We've had a rough couple of weeks at home and hubby thought yesterday would be great for all of us to just go out and spend the evening frolocking, do a movie and dinner. I am not as misled as he is but I thought it reasonable to anticipate a nice chilled evening and then maybe a coffee and cake in between at Skoobs, my fav. book store in Monte casino. The place is full of lovely entertainment for kids.

The following are my last thoughts before my head hit the pillow in exhaustion at evenings end and I know I said I wouldn't be blogging but couldn't resist this...........

  • You know you a mother when you can’t take a toilet break in peace because little people decide that’s the time to play hide and seek or tag to keep you company and you have to think of all sorts of creative ways to spend “me” time, including coming up with places that you don’t have to be for a cuppa at the coffee shop.
  • All this and more were on the
     buffet @ Billy G but I can't
    remember what it tasted like.
  • You know you a mother when you can’t remember what you ate at a fabulous restaurant because you spent half the time too busy trying to force feed a tiny person without looking like you were deliberately attempting asphyxiation in public and the other half reinforcing table manners.
  • You know you’re a mother when don’t feel you need the gym because you are nearly falling off your feet every night from running after four little feet.
  • You know you're a mother when you know you need the gym because all that running doesn’t make up for all the half finished spoonfulls and plates you finish off automatically because its far too much trouble to make a decision as to whether to store or throw away after going through the trauma of feeding two little mouths.
  • You know you're a mother when you don’t realise you’re talking to yourself until a stranger bursts out laughing because they just overheard your strangled moan followed with a whimper of: “this is too much work” as you chase someone up the stairs for the 2rd time and they beat you to the top and pass the rail to descend the same stairs again..........ON THE OTHER SIDE
  • You know you're a mother when you have to not only repeat things 5 times to the hubby to get a move on but now 15 more times before all the inhabitants start to lose the glazed look.
  • You know you're are a mother when you have to say sorry countless times to imaginary hearts because the owner complained it was broken because of your yelling.
  • You know you're are a mother when at the movies you discover at least one bucket of popcorns is at your feet and you no longer feel guilty about someone else having to clean it because no one on this planet could understand what you’re going through right now.
  • You know you a mother when you swear that the next outing his spawn will see is one of their 21st birthdays.
  • You know you a mother when you pass a couple of weeks old infant, hear them cooing and think, you know what, maybe I could do with one more. Children are a blessing.....these delusional thoughts immediately dispelled the moment I took a step away to do the running up the stairs bit.
ToTal Madness This Is.....LOL

My Life Has A Life Of Its Own

Have you ever had this happen to you. Right now I feel like I'm watching someone's life happening and I have no say in it. Something about this picture below feels a little like what I used to call my life right now.....so friends say something nice to the Man upstairs about me before you call it a night.

I will never leave you nor forsake you

And once again I know this to be true. You take me out of the miry clay make the crooked ways straight. My walk with you is never smooth and yet you remain constant in your faithfulness. As permanent as the skies, most revered and feared in the counsel of the holy ones.
You to whom the heaven and the earth belong, you have your eye on the liitle sparrow and on little me.
Sometimes it is a kick from the old enemy that has me shouting from the mountain top that The Holy One of Israel, never slumbers nor sleeps, even if I am in the uttermost parts of the sea, there shall you find me.... for you are my Keeper. You are the great I AM, and so who can say a thing and it comes to pass when You have not spoken.  When you say nothing and no one shall by any means hurt you then indeed nothing shall. Mine and my own will only continue to witness with our eyes the recompense of the wicked.
And so I continue to believe and know that though walk through this valley, my heart has no fear for this too shall pass. For it is true, You are the Lord God Almighty and the earth is filled with your goodness.  Selah......
